They are fun for awhile but die out, i still play squadron td on sc2 after years. It is my opinion that they don't really stand up to what the genre is and was use to on WC3 (and more recently sc2). I have played some of the other suggestions here that are standalone games (dungeon defenders, sanctum, orcs must die, etc.). I haven't found anything really reliable on dota2 for custom TD's, i play them once and never want to play them again, but it is free i guess. Gather resources and expand your forces to lead them to victory.

There are some other decent TD's on sc2, downside is sc2 is not the cheapest thing to buy for 5 people if you don't already own it. Download free maps and mods for StarCraft : Brood War In the distant future, the newly formed Terran Dominion faces the arrival of two hostile alien races: the savage Zerg and the enigmatic Protoss. Gem TD on sc2 is great also, and hosts up to 8 players, but everyone is solo, so if someone loses they 'sit out' and do nothing while the game continues or they can leave, so it kind of sucks to play with people. it is 4v4, so if you were hoping for 5 players together it won't work, but you could split your family up and create some rivalries. Its the only reason i even have sc2 installed still, i will get on and play every once in awhile, games take 15-30 min. Personally i feel like Squadron TD on starcraft 2 is the best TD to come out in the past 5 years or so (it's been out that long and still the most popular TD on sc2, updated fairly frequently).
